Scion . How to Install a Cooper S Air FilterThe function of the air filter on a Mini Cooper S is to block dust, dirt, sand and other small particles from entering the combustion chamber of the engine, where they might rapidly increase engine wear. But when this filter becomes clogged, it will reduce the air flow through the engine, which reduces your miles per gallon. For optimal fuel mileage, you should check this filter every time you change your engine oil and replace it whenever it is visibly dirty. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Step by Step : 1 After opening the hood, locate the air filter box, which is just to the rear right corner of the engine. It is connected to the engine via a thick plastic tube. 2 Remove the tube clamp that joins the plastic tube to the air filter box. The tube clamp is a metal ring with a simple clasp on it. To release the clasp, slide the tip of a flat-head screwdriver in the opening and twist it to either side. The clamp will loosen, allowing you to pull away the tube from the air filter box about an inch or so. 3 Remove the two metal screws on the right side of the air filter box. They're located along the seam where the lid meets the bottom of the box. 4 Slide the lid to the left about a half inch; it won't go much farther than that. When it's as far to the left as possible, lift it off. 5 Pull the old filter out of the box. Give it a close look if you'd like, and if it doesn't appear particularly dirty, put it back in. Otherwise, discard it. 6 Put in the new, clean filter in the old one's place. 7 Put the lid back down so it's just to the left side of the bottom of the air filter box, then slide it to the right until it snaps into place. 8 Replace both screws on the right side. 9 Slide the plastic tube back onto the air filter box and squeeze the sides of the tube clamp together to lock it on. Tips & Warnings If you tend to drive in unusually dusty areas such as on dirt or gravel roads, you might need to replace your air filter more often than is recommended. Filter replacement guidelines vary by filter manufacturer, but in general, the best way to tell if it's time for a new filter is to visually inspect it. The dirtier it is the less air will be getting to your engine.
Scion . How to Install a PCV Air FilterChange your PCV air filters during every tuneup. Also known as the rebreather filter, these are part of the positive crankcase ventilation system, which lets unburned crankcase gases return via the air intake to be recycled through the system. A clogged rebreather filter can cause rough idle and other performance problems. In less than five minutes, this filter can be replaced. Check with your auto parts dealer to be sure your car is equipped with a PCV valve and rebreather filter' late model cars won't necessarily have this system. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need New rebreather filter Needle-nose pliers Rags Step by Step : 1 Locate your rebreather filter. This should be located inside the primary air filter housing. It is typically a small square or rectangular filter, with a hose barb as part of the body. This barb slides through a hole in the air filter housing and attaches to the hose that runs back to the engine's valve cover and PCV valve. Open and remove the cover of the air filter housing, usually held by a single wing nut on older vehicles. 2 There is usually a thin metallic clip outside the air filter housing holding the rebreather in place. Pull this off by hand or with needle-nose pliers. 3 Pull the hose off the rebreather body. Remove the old rebreather from the air filter housing. 4 Clean the inside of the air filter housing if necessary, using a rag. Now is a good time to change the primary air filter as well. 5 Insert your new rebreather filter into the air filter housing and slide the retaining clip in place. Reattach the hose to the rebreather. 6 Be sure your air filter is properly seated before replacing the air filter cover. Tips & Warnings A rebreather filter may have a dirty appearance soon after being placed in service. However, a filter with wet, excessive oil indicates other engine problems like leaking piston rings or poor ignition. Consult a mechanic. Never smoke or use open flames while changing the rebreather filter. You are in close proximity to gasoline via the carburetor.
